Microbial communities at hydrothermal vents mediate the transformation of energy and minerals produced by geological activity into organic material.

Organic matter produced by autotrophic bacteria is then used to support the upper trophic levels.

The approximate rate of pressure increase in the ocean is 10Mega-pascals (MPa) for every kilometre that is traveled towards the seafloor.

This means that hydrostatic pressure can reach up to 110MPa at the depths of the trenches.

These temperatures stay in the range of 0-3 °C with the exception of the waters immediately surrounding the hydrothermal vents which can get as high as 407 °C.

These waters are prevented from boiling due to the pressure that is acting upon it at those depths. This allows water from the ocean to enter into the crust of the earth where it is heated by the magma. The increasing pressure and temperature forces the water back out of these openings, on the way out, the water accumulates dissolved minerals and chemicals from the rocks that it encounters.Although there is a large variation in temperatures at the surface of the water with the changing depths of the thermocline seasonally, the temperatures underneath the thermocline and the waters near the deep sea are relatively constant. There aren’t any changes that are brought about by seasonal effects or annual changes. These include organisms in the microbial mat, free floating cells, or bacteria in an endosymbiotic relationship with animals.Chemolithoautotrophic bacteria derive nutrients and energy from the geological activity at Hydrothermal vents to fix carbon into organic forms. These organisms also provide the foundation for further development of the ecosystem as they are hunted by larger creatures. The Hydrothermal vent microbial community encompasses all unicellular organisms that live and reproduce in a chemically distinct area around Hydrothermal vents.Microbes that live here are known to be hyperthermophiles which by definition are microorganisms that grow at temperatures above 90 °C.These organisms are found where the fluids from the vents are expelled and mixed with the surrounding water.

  • Where do bacteria that carry out chemosynthesis live?

The bacteria found in hydrothermal vents undergo chemosynthesis. That is, they break down chemicals to generate their own food, just as a plant would undergo photosynthesis. Why do deep sea.…

  • Chemosynthesis - Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory

Chemosynthesis. Chemosynthetic microbes provide the foundation for biological colonization of vents. Chemosynthetic microbes live on or below the seafloor, and even within the bodies of other vent animals as symbionts. Where microbial mat covers the seafloor around vents, grazers such as snails, limpets, and scaleworms eat the mat.…

  • Deep Sea Creatures Chemosynthesis

Chemosynthesis is a process of producing energy by burning chemicals. It requires no sunlight and is typical for deep sea ecosystems near the hydrothermal vents. It was first discovered in 1890 by Sergei Nikolaevich Vinogradskii as a result of his physiological research in that period.…

  • Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents National Geographic Society

Hydrothermal vents have been found all over the ocean, including regions of the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic oceans. The deepest vent located so far is in the Cayman Trough, which is the deepest point in the Caribbean Sea. The trough is located along the boundary between the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate.…

  • The Alien Worlds of Hydrothermal Vents - Science in the News

This process is called chemosynthesis, and is carried out by microorganisms in the rocks, sediments, fluids, and even within some of the animals found at hydrothermal vents. Figure 1 This image traces the pathway that seawater makes through the ocean crust as it is chemically and thermally transformed into hydrothermal fluid.…

  • What is CHEMOSYNTHESIS? eNotes

Many chemosynthetic organisms can be found by hydrothermal vents, or where methane can be found within the Earth. In hydrogen sulfide chemosynthesis, carbon dioxide plus oxygen plus hydrogen.…

  • What is a chemosynthetic organism -

Chemoautotroph That is an organism that makes its own energy from chemicals. Chemosynthetic bacteria for example, do this and they are found on the hydrothermal vernts along the MId Ocean Ridge.…

  • Photosynthetic Organisms - Plants, Algae, Cyanobacteria

Algae are eukaryotic organisms that have characteristics of both plants and animals. Like animals, algae are capable of feeding on organic material in their environment. Some algae also contain organelles and structures found in animals cells, such as flagella and centrioles. Like plants, algae contain photosynthetic organelles called chloroplasts.…
