They follow the order in which they are most commonly found in a paragraph; however, this is not the only possible or even successful order. First, the topic sentence summarizes the main point of the paragraph. What your main thesis does for the whole paper, the topic sentence does for the paragraph. Again, usually, if well written, the ideas in your topic sentence will be a bit complicated. This is something you are familiar with from high school writing.
