The selection committee will base their decisions on the following criteria: 1. The quality of the applicant’s CV (presentations, publications, awards, creative work, etc.) 3. candidacy (may be letter of admission to candidacy) 3. Letter of support / evaluation statement of the dissertation plans and likelihood it will be completed within the fellowship period (750 words maximum); this statement, which is to be submitted directly by its author, should be written by either (a) dissertation advisor, or (b) another member of the dissertation committee.
The Center for Humanities and the Arts, the Graduate School, and the College of Arts & Sciences have unified the Dissertation Fellowship Award process for graduate students in Arts and Humanities.
There are six full-year dissertation awards — Devaney, Emerson, Lowe, Reynolds, the CHA Dissertation Fellowship, and the Graduate School Dissertation Award.

Recipients will be asked to submit a letter notifying the Dean’s Office of the completion of their dissertation.

Additionally, students may not take classes outside of their dissertation hours nor may they accept another fellowship or grant during the same time.
Doctoral students who have advanced to candidacy (D status) in the following departments and programs in the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible to apply for a Dissertation Fellowship: Asian Languages and Civilizations, Classics, English, French and Italian, Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures, History, Philosophy, Spanish and Portuguese, and Theatre & Dance.
