Corrie reflects on her childhood and the lessons that accompanied it, but given the way that the world has changed, doubt s she’ll ever have use for the things she learned then.

The following few chapters flashback to Corrie’s youth in earnest, and explore the family connections and her deepening faith in God.

The government decides to remain neutral in the war, but it is soon invaded by the Nazi forces.

Under German occupation the ten Booms must submit to new rules and regulations; some are relatively harmless, such as the 10pm curfew, others are more sinister, such as local Jews forced to where yellow identifying stars on their clothing and growing anti-Semitism.

The house and watch shop are eventually raided by the Gestapo and the entire family is arrested even though they do not find the secret room.

The family is transported to Scheveningen prison and separated. Corrie learns that the majority of her family have been released from the prison, barring herself and Betsie, she also learns by a letter from her sister Nollie that their father died 10 days into the imprisonment.

The threat of an Ally invasion increases tensions in the camp, many are executed, and the women are moved into Germany, to the notorious extermination camp, Ravensbruck.

There conditions are even worse and their labour intensifies, although the barracks are less supervised and the sisters lead evening worship services.

The family first decide to become involved in the underground in 1942, when a man they know from the community poisons his beloved pet bulldogs in case the Nazis come for him.

Corrie’s father invites the man to visit often, but he only does so at night because it may be dangerous for the family.
