Conformity is generally regarded as a passive form of influence in that members of the group do not actively attempt to influence others.

People merely observe the actions of group members and adjust their behaviors and/or views accordingly.

This danger was illustrated in a famous study in which participants were instructed to administer painful electric shocks to another person in what they believed to be a learning experiment.
