UEA pioneered the teaching of Creative Writing in the UK.We established the first MA in Creative Writing in 1970 and the first Ph D in Creative and Critical Writing in 1987.The New School offered the first academic creative writing workshop in 1931 and pioneered a new philosophy of education.

In 2019, Spalding established the School of Creative and Professional Writing with the MFA as its flagship program to meet the needs of the times for serious literary and professional writers.

Our History The Spalding MFA in Writing program was founded by Sena Jeter Naslund and Karen Mann.
